glennie mcintosh: on your wavelength Bored people

Bored People

It's not just teenagers who get bored - and it's not just a simple lack of concentration that causes people to switch off.

Isolation and exclusion are often key factors in giving people reason to appear disinterested.

Capturing, and holding attention

How do you engage with people who think they will be bored by what you have to say? How can you galvanise people who are already bored by their life circumstances – because they are unemployed, disenchanted or lack the financial resources to do what they want?

An effective communicator will look for ways to make a subject fresh and relevant, looking for new dimensions and linking it to other areas the audience will want to hear about.

You need to be relevant, and to come up with ideas that give a new perspective on subjects your audience might think they already know about.

A state of mind

Boredom can have major negative impacts on people and is often a symptom of deeper problems, such as depression, ineffective teaching, or ineffective management in a workplace. People who feel bored may lack the ability to change the situation or may lack the motivation to do so.

A positive way to tackle boredom is through creative thought.
